First Leader: Mark Dimondstein, President
Circumstances at Formation: Early postal unions had essentially no bargaining rights and wages were decided by the Congress. As a result, postal workers were extremely underpaid. They barely earned enough money to make ends meet and many relied on food stamps.
Current Number of Members: 80,000
Mission/Purpose: APWU has fought for dignity and respect on the job for the workers we represent, as well as for decent pay and benefits and safe working conditions. APWU supports the struggle for social and economic justice for all working families.
Current News/ Issues: The APWU is on the precipice of coverting Maintenance Craft Postal Support Employees to career. The opportunity to secure a career position is extremely important to PSEs, who are always at risk of being released due to lack of work.
